Updated: 2018-11-19

The Ulu Tutong Dam project in Brunei, constructed by POWERCHINA subsidiary Sinohydro Foundation Engineering Co, was formally handed over to the Brunei government on Nov 17, 2018.

The dam is a water supply project to support Brunei's 2020 Development Plan as well as POWERCHINA's first project in the country.

The Sinohydro Foundation Engineering Co was responsible for the project, including the construction of the earth-filled dam with a clay core, the diversion channel, the concrete cut-off wall, the intake tower, the spillway and ancillary facilities.

The company imported equipment and components from Europe and US to ensure the project was well supplied with resources, and overcame the effects of frequent heavy rains to guarantee smooth progress. Furthermore, the company made several scientific achievements during the construction.

The project started in February 2010 and was finished in June 2017, following British standards. As the largest water conservancy project in Brunei, the Ulu Tudong dam will provide long-term and reliable fresh water resources to locals, benefiting 250,000 Brunei people and satisfying the increasing water demand due to population growth.

It will also help alleviate the flooding problem in low-lying areas downstream. Meanwhile, the project will also serve as a tourist attraction.
