UAE's first H-class gas turbine power plant breaks ground

Updated: 2019-04-02

A state-of-the-art H-class gas turbine power plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) broke ground on March 31, 2019. The project is being undertaken by Siemens and POWERCHINA's subsidiary SepcoIII Electric Power Construction Co (SepcoIII).

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by the CEOs of Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), and Dubai Holding.

Located at EGA's Jebel Ali aluminum smelter in Dubai, the project will be UAE's first H-class gas turbine power plant installed with Siemen's highly-efficient combined cycle H-class gas turbine.

The power facilities in the smelter have been operating for more than 10 years, with its operation efficiency declining. The new plant will boost the efficiency of power production at the smelter, lowering emissions and reducing the consumption of natural gas.

With an installed capability of 623.6MW, the project will be constructed for 28 and a half months and is slated to enter operation in April 2021.

In recent years, SepcoIII has striven to expand its market in Middle Eastern countries, setting up overseas headquarters in Dubai and undertaking multiple EPC power projects in Jordan, Oman, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia.
