POWERCHINA wins project bid in China-Pakistan Economic Corridor

Updated: May 20,2016

On May 20, POWERCHINA won the bid for the section 2 project for the 2×330 MW circulating fluidized bed coal-fired power plant in the Pakistan THAR coal field. It is the third time the company has undertaken projects in power engineering construction since entering Pakistan's power construction market in 1983 and 2010.

The project is one of the higher prioritized projects as China implements the "Belt and Road" Initiative to promote the construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. The Chinese Premier and Pakistani Prime Minister witnessed the signing of the financial memorandum between the two countries in November 2014 and the Heads of State of the two countries witnessed the signing of the loan agreement in April 2015. As the first coal-power integration project in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, it is of great political significance.

In order to win the bidding, the marketing department of POWERCHINA tracked the project since 2015. After meticulous preparation and several rounds of clarification and negotiation, it finally won the bid despite fierce competition. The success comes from active and progressive adjustments to the market development strategy of the enterprise according to the actual market situation, the scientific decision-making of the leaders of the enterprise, and the careful organization of the market department. It has now laid a solid foundation for realizing its annual goal of market development.

The power plant is located in Islambotoc, 450 km to the southeast of Karachi City of Sindh Province, 30 km from the border between India and Pakistan, and approximately 300 km from Hyderabad city. The construction of the power plant relies on the large scale coal mine of the THAR COAL PROJECT. The construction work includes the installation of the main body of unit 2, the public coal conveying system, the ash and slag handling system, and the electrical system. The project is scheduled to last 24 months from the installation of the first steel frame of the boiler.

The implementation of the project will effectively promote development of energy resources in Pakistan and greatly improve the well-being of the local people. In addition, it initiates new planning and modes for energy cooperation between China and Pakistan.
