Zambian President Edgar Lungu inspected the POWERCHINA-constructed Kafue Gorge Lower project in southern Zambia on Oct 4.
The China-aided major hydro-power plant is by far Zambia’s largest single investment in energy infrastructure and its first major hydro-power plant in 40 years.
The project gained debt financing from the China Exim Bank and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China.
Lungu appreciated the progress of the construction after a tour at the project site. He expected POWERCHINA to make persistent efforts in the construction and hoped the plant would tackle the power deficit and improve people’s lives in Zambia.

After the inspection tour, the Zambian leader attended the unveiling ceremony of a training school for the power plant’s employees at the project site.
In his speech, he spoke highly of the school, adding that the support from the Chinese government, the China Exim Bank and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China ensured the project’s implementation.
He has since thanked the Chinese firms involved for building a school, hotel, police office and hospital at the Kafue Gorge, which greatly benefit the local residents.
