Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza stood proudly among officials and onlookers as he cut the ribbon for the completion ceremony of the transnational highway (third section) in Burundi, constructed by POWERCHINA's subsidiary Stecol Corporation, on Oct 26.
Music and cheers were the first things to flood the street of the highway at the celebratory event. The media and some 1,000 locals were treated to the culturally-explosive singing and dancing of local performers.
Stretching a total of 44.6 kilometers, the third section of the Burundi transnational highway is located in Makamba province, close to Tanzania. Once fully completed, the highway will help connect north and south Burundi and is expected to benefit local economic growth by boosting trade among Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda.
In addition, as part of the project, Burundi's capital, Bujumbura, installed its first traffic lights.
Burundian Senate President Révérien Ndikuriyo, Chinese Ambassador to Burundi Li Changlin, and some Burundian officials were also present at the ceremony.
