POWERCHINA's Sinohydro Corporation and Thai company TRC signed an EPC contract for a potash mining project with Thai company Asean Potash Chaiyaphum Public Company (APOT) in Bangkok Aug 23.
"POWERCHINA is among the top 500 companies in the world and has gained the trust of project owners worldwide," said Li Yanming, vice general manager of Power Construction Corporation of China Limited, in his address during the signing ceremony.
The potash mining project is a large undertaking, but POWERCHINA plans to complete it on time and without skimping on quality, Li said. He hopes that the two sides will continue to maintain a close relationship in order to achieve better results.
The APOT potash mining project is located in Chaiyaphum province, Thailand. The above-ground portion includes 26 kilometers of raw water pipelines, a potash fertilizer processing plant and supporting facilities, 7.5 kilometers of waste conveyor belts, waste water pipelines, waste processing plants and waste water pools.
Super-thick sylvite and potassium bearing strata were discovered in Thailand's Khorat Plateau and the border area of Thailand and Laos in the 1970s, catching the attention of ASEAN countries.
APOT was established in 1991. However, the potash mining project was suspended due to the 1998 Southeast Asia financial crisis. POWERCHINA began eyeing the project at the beginning of 2017 and was placed in charge of completing it on April 20, 2018 after a bidding war with other interested parties.
Ji Xiaoyong, vice general manager of POWERCHINA International and president of POWERCHINA Asia-Pacific, and APOT CEO and general manager Smai Leesakul signed the contract.
