Zambian President Edgar Lungu attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Kafulafuta Water supply project in Copperbelt province, Zambia on Sept 21.

The project is constructed by POWERCHINA's subsidiary Sinohydro Bureau 1 Co and funded by the Bank of China and other financial institutions.

In addition to Edgar Lungu, Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Li Jie as well as Zambian ministers, high-profile government officials, chieftains and more than 1,000 local residents were present at the ceremony.

The project will bring huge benefit to Zambia’s third largest city Ndola and its neighboring areas and greatly improve the water quality and livelihood of local people, Edgar Lungu said in his address, adding that it will also create a large number of jobs and business opportunities during its construction.

Li Jie reviewed and summarized the achievements made thanks to cooperation between the two countries, saying that the Kafulafuta water supply project will improve public health and provide guarantees for social and economic development in Zambia.

The project includes a dam with a storage capacity of 125 million cubic meters which will provide drinking water for about 1 million people.
