The Sesan II Hydropower Plant, is situated on the Se San River in Stung Treng province, northeastern Cambodia, and has been dubbed as the Three Gorges Project in Cambodia, highlighting a 6,500-meter-long dam, the longest in Asia. It is equipped with eight Chinese-made units, with installed capacity of 400 megawatts, 20 percent of Cambodia's total.
The plant has attracted great attention from the Cambodian government, with the prime minister visiting the project site twice and speaking highly of the construction.
During the completion ceremony, Hun Sen said the plant will serve as a bridge to enhance China and Cambodia's friendship. He also expressed gratitude to the development potential brought by China's Belt and Road Initiative and hoped for a better bilateral relationship.
As a key energy project in Cambodia, the plant is expected to inject new energy into Cambodia's economic and social growth and set a model for Sino-Cambodian energy cooperation.
In addition, the project demonstrated the marvelous "Chinese Speed" by finishing construction within five years, starting in October 2013, putting its first unit into operation in December 2017 and witnessing full operation in October 2018.
POWERCHINAs subsidiaries have played key role in the construction, as the project was designed by Huadong Engineering Corp Ltd, supervised by Zhongnan Engineering Corp Ltd, and partly-built by Sinohydro Bureau 8 Co.
Huadong has conducted extensive research to optimize the design, saving costs of $20 million. During the construction, Sinohydro Bureau 8 Co employed many local workers and rented local equipment, boosting Cambodia’s employment and improving locals' life.
