Updated: March 18,2019

POWERCHINA has participated in the rescue work and extended financial assistance to victims of Cyclone Idai in Mozambique.

On the evening of March 14, the strong tropical Cyclone Idai landed on the central coast of Sofala province in Mozambique. Sofala, Manica, and the surrounding areas suffered from the strong hurricane and heavy rains throughout the day, resulting in power, water, communications, and traffic disruptions.

In the hardest hit city of Beira, 90 percent of the area was affected by the disaster, and the entire city center was inundated by the cyclone.

A total of 23,000 houses were destroyed. The confirmed death toll has risen to more than 400. Over 500,000 people have been directly affected by the disaster.

Facing such a serious disaster, POWERCHINA immediately organized forces to cooperate with local disaster relief workers.

The Nacala Water Distribution Center project constructed by Sinohydro Bureau 9 Co dispatched two 550KW generators and one 1,300KW generator to the city of Beira on March 17, which supplied power to the water supply system and helped restore normal water supply to the city.

Sinohydro Bureau 11 Co, which undertakes the EN1 road repairing project in Sofala province, dispatched personnel, four dump truck operators, and four dump trucks to Inchope for emergency work on March 20 to ensure the resumption of the N6 highway.

In addition to participating in the rescue work, POWERCHINA-Intl actively organized member companies in Mozambique, under the call of the Chinese Embassy in Mozambique, to raise donations and provide financial assistance to people in the disaster areas.
