Southeast Asia's largest photovoltaic power plant put into operation

Updated: June 25,2019

The Dau Tieng 500 megawatt (MW) Photovoltaic Solar Power Plant in Tay Ninh, Vietnam was awarded the last commercial operation certificate on June 18, indicating that the largest photovoltaic power plant in Southeast Asia has been put into operation.

The power plant was financed by POWERCHINA Huadong Engineering Corporation under an EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) contract, while Sichuan Company of Shandong Electric Power Construction Co (SEPCO) participated in its construction.

The power plant is an atypical water surface photovoltaic (PV) project, which had the characteristics of huge volume, high technical difficulty, complicated financing structure, a tight construction period, changing construction conditions, and difficult resource organization.

Covering an area of 580 hectares, the photovoltaic field has more than 1.49 million photovoltaic modules.

Due to the location in the water-fluctuating zone of Dau Tieng Lake, 80 percent of the project site was submerged. However, the construction period took only 11 months.

Relying on digital design and information project management, SEPCO integrated high-quality enterprise clusters of the new energy industry from home and abroad to improve supply chain integration.

POWERCHINA implemented ten PV projects in the same period in Vietnam, forming a project cluster with an installed capacity of 900MW, including Vietnam's first floating PV project.

As of June 18, 2019, all projects have completed commercial operations ahead of schedule.

The Vietnamese government is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by a quarter by 2030 and increasing its solar energy power generation capacity of 8 MW two years ago to 12 gigawatts (GW) in 2030.

According to recent data, Vietnam has surpassed India to become the largest recipient of photovoltaic power plants and solar panels exported from China.
