Built by POWERCHINA, the Jinping II Hydropower Station on the Yalong River in Sichuan and the Xiaowan Hydropower Station on the Lancang River won the 2019 Project Excellence Awards of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC), known as the "Nobel Prize of engineering," on Sept 10.
The FIDIC is an authoritative international non-governmental organization in the global engineering consulting industry. The FIDIC Project Excellence Award was established in 2013, and annually selects and awards a number of engineering projects that have outstanding applications for the world's economic and social development.
The Jinping II Hydropower Station is the backbone of China's "West-to-East Electricity Transmission" project. It is the longest-drainage power station with the largest depth, largest scale, and most complicated construction conditions in the world.

With a total installed capacity of 4.8 million kilowatts and an annual generating capacity of 24.23 billion kilowatt-hours, it is the largest and most efficient hydropower station among the cascaded power stations in the Yalong River. In addition, the Jinping underground laboratory, which relies on the project and its key technologies, is currently the dark matter laboratory with the deepest rock cover, the largest volume, the smallest cosmic ray flux, and the most complete infrastructure in the world.
The Xiaowan Hydropower Station is the world's first 300 meter arch dam, with a total installed capacity of 4.2 million kW and an annual generating capacity of 19 billion kWh.
It is a landmark project for the country to implement the Western Development Policy and the "West-to-East Power Transmission" project.
The project proposed a number of innovative achievements that have been incorporated into national regulations and widely used in many projects. It was rated as the National Soil and Water Conservation Ecological Civilization Project.
