Bangladesh PM attends groundbreaking ceremony for expansion project of HSIA

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the T3 terminal expansion project for the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka, the national capital, on Dec 28.

The project is set to increase the airport's annual passenger handling capacity from the current 8 million to approximately 20 million, and the cargo capacity from 200,000 to 500,000 metric tons.

The owner of the project is the Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh (CAAB) has contracted Mitsubishi Corporation, Fujita Corporation and Samsung C&T to complete the project.

With a construction period of four years, the project is expected to cost 213 billion taka (about $2.73 billion), of which 50 billion taka is financed by the government, and the rest is funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency.

At present, as the general contractor's strategic partner, Sinohydro Group, a subsidiary of POWERCHINA, has won the bid to undertake the airport floor and fencing projects, including the terminal floor, construction roads and fencing.

It also provided strong support for the project commencement celebration, and received high praise from the general contractor and the owner.
