POWERCHINA signed a memorandum of understanding, or an MOU, for a feasibility study to be conducted on the proposed Mandalay-Bagan Railway Line with the Myanmar Ministry of Transport and Communications on Jan 17.

The Myanmar transport minister affirmed the contribution of POWERCHINA in boosting Myanmar's economic development and boosting its local employment. He said Mandalay and Bagan had special meaning for the Myanmar people and the project could greatly promote the development of the tourism economy in those two cities.
Officials said it is hoped POWERCHINA will complete the feasibility study as soon as possible and that the project will become a landmark for Myanmar's first standard rail railway.
They said the Ministry of Transport and Communications would actively support and help to ensure its success.
In his speech, Chinese ambassador Chen Hai said the project will ease the transportation difficulties in Mandalay and Bagan, and promote economic development along the line, as well as play an important role in promoting the construction of the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor.
He said that POWERCHINA has been in the Myanmar market for many years and has undertaken investment and construction of a large number of projects related to social welfare, power and infrastructure.
He added that it is believed that with the strong support of all parties in Myanmar, POWERCHINA will be able to complete a high-quality feasibility study report for the Myanmar government and its people.
