Introduction

POWERCHINA is a global leading company in hydropower planning, design, and construction. Over the past 60 years, POWERCHINA has undertaken over 65% of large and medium-scale hydropower stations in China and has completed over 80% of planning and design projects. Its global market share of hydropower construction has exceeded 50%. More than 200 large and medium-sized hydropower stations have been designed and constructed by POWERCHINA, and the total installed capacity has exceeded over 200 GW.


The landmark hydropower projects designed or mainly constructed by POWERCHINA include:

1.Three Gorges Hydroelectric Power Station, the world's largest hydropower station with a total installed capacity of 22,500 MW, with POWERCHINA as one of its main contractors.

2.Jinping I Hydropower Station has a dam of 305 meters high, which is the world's tallest hyperbolic thin arch dam.

3.Baihetan Hydropower Station contains the largest single hydropower unit capacity in the world with a single unit rated output of 1 GW.

4.The Lianghekou Hydropower Station (under construction) has a 295-meter high dam and it will be the world's second highest rockfill dam when completed.

5.Sudan Merowe Hydropower Station on the Nile River has a total installed capacity of 1,200 MW and a total dam length of 9.8 kilometers, which is the longest barrage in the world so far.


Landmark hydropower projects are as follows:

1. Bakun Hydroelectric Project in Malaysia

With a total installed capacity of 2,400 MW, Bakun Hydroelectric Project has won China National Quality Engineering Golden Award and International Milestone Engineering Award for Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam.

2. Nam Ou Cascaded Hydropower Project in Laos

With a total installed capacity of 1,272 MW, Nam Ou Cascaded Hydropower Project is the first overseas hydropower project with the planning and investment for the whole basin developed by POWERCHINA.

3. Merowe Hydropower Project in Sudan

With a total installed capacity of 1,250 MW, Merowe Hydropower Project has won the Luban Prize for Construction Projects (overseas projects) in China.

4. Bui Hydropower Project in Ghana

With a total installed capacity of 400 MW and annual energy output of 1 billion kWh, Bui Hydropower Project has won the Power Engineering Award and the Excellent Engineering Award granted by the Government of Ghana as well as the Luban Prize for Construction Projects (overseas projects) of China.

5. Three Gorges Hydropower Station in China

It is the world's largest hydropower station with a total installed capacity of 22,500 MW.

6. Xiluodu Hydropower Station in China

Xiluodu Hydropower Station is the world's fourth largest hydropower station with a total installed capacity of 13,860 MW and has won the 2016 FIDIC Outstanding Project of the Year.

7. Baihetan Hydropower Station in China

With a total installed capacity of 16,000 MW, Baihetan Hydropower Station is the world's second-largest hydropower station with a single unit capacity of 1,000 MW, ranking first in the world.

8. Longtan Hydropower Station in China

With a total installed capacity of 6,426 MW, Longtan Hydropower Station with the world's highest RCC dam and the largest underground powerhouse has received the FIDIC Centenary Award.
