POWERCHINA's first overseas gas-fired power station holds ignition ceremony

The ignition ceremony of the first gas turbine of the Kyaukpyu Combined Cycle Power Station, invested by POWERCHINA, was held both online and offline in Rakhine State in Myanmar on Oct 10, marking the official countdown to the company's first overseas gas power station being put in operation.

Aung Zeya, deputy minister of the Ministry of Electric Power and Energy of Myanmar, and Chen Hai, Chinese ambassador to Myanmar, attended the ceremony.

The ignition ceremony of the first gas turbine of the Kyaukpyu Combined Cycle Power Station, invested by POWERCHINA, is held in Rakhine State in Myanmar on Oct 10.

Zeya said that the Kyaukpyu project is of great significance to easing regional electricity shortages, boosting economic development, and promoting local employment. POWERCHINA has fulfilled its social responsibilities and carried out several public welfare activities, such as donating funds to students and providing anti-epidemic supplies, winning praise from all walks of life.

Chen expressed his congratulations on the official ignition. He said that the investment, development, and construction of the Kyaukpyu project have drawn a great deal of attention from the governments of China and Myanmar and brought tangible benefits to both sides. All participating parties in the project have worked together to fight against the pandemic and overcome difficulties, making outstanding achievements in the development of various undertakings in Rakhine State. It has strengthened cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor and contributed to carrying forward the China-Myanmar friendship and promoting a China-Myanmar community with a shared future.

Myanmar is a crucial BRI country and also a key market for POWERCHINA. The Kyaukpyu project is an important infrastructure project to improve local people's livelihoods and promote industrial development. POWERCHINA will continue to give full play to its advantages to make it a demonstration project in the field of power and energy cooperation between China and Myanmar.

Located in the Kyaukpyu Special Economic Zone in the western Rakhine State of Myanmar, the Kyaukpyu Gas-fired Power Station, with an installed capacity of 135 MW, will have an annual on-grid energy of about 1 billion kW upon completion.
