The Kajtumba highway project department of POWERCHINA in Rwanda received an emergency call from local government officials on May 19.
A village road about 50 kilometers away from the project department was blocked by stones that fell off a hill. This caused more than a dozen villages and hundreds of villagers to struggle getting in touch with the outside world. Supplies were in shortage and roads needed to be repaired as soon as possible.
In recent months, Rwanda has experienced frequent rainfall. The heavy rainfall for a long duration, coupled with the hilly and mountainous terrain in Rwanda led to frequent natural disasters such as rocks falling, landslides and mudslides. Road traffic has also been greatly affected.
After receiving the assistance request, the project department immediately arranged for Chinese staff to check the scene of the incident. According to the large amount and volume of falling rocks on the site, they formulated an emergency plan for blasting and subsequent clean-up. Staff and equipment were arranged accordingly.

With the weather not being adequate and the day getting dark, they decided to start repairs on the morning of the next day. On the morning of May 20, related staff and equipment rushed to the scene to carry out repair work. Local government officials and the military also rushed to the scene to coordinate the command.
All the parties worked closely together. The blasting and site cleaning went smoothly. After nearly 10 hours of uninterrupted operation, the road was finally cleared in the afternoon.
POWERCHINA was highly praised by local government for its full support of the rescue work.
