The Qasim Coal Fired Power Plant, a project co-invested and built by Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) and Al Mirqab Capital (AMC), was recently conferred the 15th Annual Environment Excellence Awards 2018 in Karachi, Pakistan.
As the only awarded China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project and Chinese company in Pakistan, the plant was honored for its contribution to Pakistan's environmental protection.
The award was also recognition of POWERCHINA's efforts to protect Pakistan's environment. The plant will continue with its corporate responsibility and contribute to the local ecological environment.
The Qasim coal-fired power plant has two 660Mw super-critical coal-fired generators, with annual electricity output of nine billion degrees. The plant will meet the demand of four million local households for efficient, clean, cheap and continuous energy. Compared with oil and gas power plants, the Qasim plant features higher thermal efficiency and environmental protection.
Meanwhile, the power plant is the first and only of its kind in Pakistan which uses seawater secondary circulation cooling to prevent the environment from being affected by rising seawater temperature in case of single circulation cooling. It also adopts the seawater desalination technology to save the local freshwater resources and uses waste-water recycling for water spraying in coal yards.
As POWERCHINA's largest overseas project, the plant has conducted real-time monitoring on fume emission to meet the standard of World Bank. It has won high acclaim from Pakistan government for its lower fume emission and protection of marine ecology and air quality.
In addition, the Qasim coal-fired power plant has planted 125 acres (50.59 hectares) of mangrove forest to protect local mangrove resources. The mangrove, an unusual species which grows in coastal areas, is of key importance in protecting the coastal areas from high-energy wind and wave action and purifying seawater and air.
