The Merowe Dam, which started construction in 2003, was the single largest overseas hydropower project undertaken by any Chinese company that year. It doubled the total installation capacity of Sudan's state power and was praised by Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir as Sudan's project of the century.

After the Merowe dam began operating, electricity costs in Sudan were reduced by 25 to 30 percent.

The dam was selected as one of the Chinese government's eight key projects in Africa.

It was also awarded the Luban Award for Overseas Projects due to its outstanding engineering quality, and was dubbed the "Sudan three gorges project" by the global community.
