POWERCHINA has organized many socially responsible activities such as sponsoring local traditional festivals, making public welfare donations, and supporting overseas students.
It has also renovated or built roads measuring over 500 kilometers, and constructed 20 large and medium-sized bridges in the project area.
In addition, POWERCHINA has also set up docks, schools, markets, hospitals, and temples, which have greatly improved local infrastructure conditions and increased the level of local public education, transportation, medical care, and other public services.
The Nam Ou River Cascade Hydropower Plant is a project that POWERCHINA obtained overall planning of the whole basin and BOT investment development in Laos.
It is also a full-industry chain integration project for the overseas whole-water hydropower investment and development of POWERCHINA.
The first phase of the Nam Ou River project involves the second, fifth, and sixth cascade hydropower stations with an installation capacity of 540 MW. It started commercial operation on Jan 1, 2017. By Jan 26, 2019, the total cumulative power generated reached 3.8 billion kWh.
The second phase of the project involves the first, third, fourth, and seventh cascade hydropower stations with a total installed capacity of 732 MW. It is expected that the first unit will be put into operation at the end of 2019, and all power generation units will be put into operation in 2020.
At that time, the seven cascade hydropower stations will take full advantages of the Nam Ou River basin to supply a steady stream of high-quality electric energy to the northern power grid of Laos, which will effectively promote the economic and social development of Laos.
