Updated: April 10,2019

The commencement ceremony for the construction of a highway project in southern Rwanda's Huye district undertaken by POWERCHINA was held on March 29.

Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye, Rwandan Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, Wang Jiaxin, the Economic and Commercial Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Rwanda, media reporters, and hundreds of local residents attended the ceremony.

The project is an important inter-city highway in the southern part of Rwanda, connecting many cities and towns including Huye and Kibeho. It is also vital for Rwanda to connect the country with Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Tanzania.

The project is planned with a total length of 66.3 kilometers. It will improve the transportation and living conditions of people in the southern provinces of Rwanda, as well as promote the development of agriculture and tourism.

Upon completion, the highway will facilitate travel in the region, improve people's living quality and standards, and provide a strong impetus for local economic development.

During construction, the project will create a large number of employment and business opportunities for local residents.
