Kyaukse power plant in Myanmar put into operation

Updated: May 22,2019

The inauguration ceremony of the Kyaukse 145MW gas-fired power plant was held in Mandalay region, Myanmar on May 17.

The project was undertaken by SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Co, a subsidiary of POWERCHINA, under an EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) contract.

Myanmar's State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar Minister of Electricity and Energy U Win Khaing, and heads of relevant government departments attended the ceremony.

Aung San Suu Kyi spoke highly of SEPCOIII's high-quality performance. She stressed that it is urgent for Myanmar to increase electricity production as there is an electricity shortage of more than 50 percent. The power generated by the Kyaukse power plant will be transmitted not only to Mandalay region, but also to the national grid, benefiting people in the whole country.

U Win Khaing said in a speech that the Kyaukse power plant will produce 1.274 billion kWh of clean electricity per year, which will benefit 2.7 million residents.

As the summer peak of electricity consumption has approached, the Kyaukse power plant has begun to provide continuous and reliable power supply to Mandalay region. Local people will no longer worry about power outages.
