Built by POWERCHINA, the inaugurating ceremony of the Kandy North Pathadumbara Integrated Water Supply Project in Sri Lanka was held on Sept 21.
The inaugurating ceremony was attended by Ranil Wickremesinghe, Primer Minister of Sri Lanka, Cheng Xueyuan, Chinese ambassador to Sri Lanka, as well as other representatives of POWERCHINA and Sri Lanka.
In his speech, Wickremesinghe stated that the project is the largest municipal water supply project in Sri Lanka's current network, adding that the long-awaited project will benefit nearly 500,000 people in the Kandy area.

He also expressed gratitude to the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka, the Export-Import Bank of China, and POWERCHINA for their support and efforts in the promotion of the project, adding that he hopes that China and Sri Lanka will continue to promote cooperation in the future.
Cheng said that the water supply project is a key cooperation project between China and Sri Lanka to jointly promote the development of infrastructure in Sri Lanka and improve the people's livelihoods in Kandy.
Relying on the Belt and Road Initiative, the two countries will continue to promote all-round friendly cooperation and the vigorous development of China-Sri Lanka friendly relations, Cheng added.

Located in Kandy, the second largest city in Sri Lanka, the project adopted the design and construction general contracting model. It was financed by the Export-Import Bank of China.
The project is distributed in six administrative areas in the northern part of Kandy, with a construction area of approximately 318 square kilometers.
The project's main construction include 83 km in water supply pipelines, 567 km in water distribution pipelines, 29 water pools, and 18 pumping stations for civil construction and electromechanical installation, as well as the water treatment plant, clear water basin, filtration system, and silt drying tank.
