POWERCHINA undertakes world's largest combined cycle power plant in Saudi Arabia

Updated: February 07,2020

Saudi Aramco's Jazan power station project in Saudi Arabia, built by POWERCHINA and SEPCO Electric Power Construction Corporation of Shandong province was successfully connected to the grid on Feb 5. The 3,850 MW power station project features 12 gas turbines.

Saudi Aramco's Jazan project is the world's largest combined cycle power station project. The total generating capacity of 3,850 MW is provided by five units, with each unit including two sets of Siemens gas turbines and generators, two sets of waste heat boilers, and one steam turbine generator, with the power station adopting combined cycle technology.

Now it's complete, the power plant will not only provide power for economic zones in Jazan, it can also supply 2,400 MW for the National Grid of Saudi Arabia, which is of great significance to the country.

The project is positioning itself as large scale and high-end, built to high technical standards, with a high degree of internationalization and strict management procedures which have overcome several challenges that have arisen in the delivery of such an international project.

Since the project was started in April 2015, the project team has encountered many issues, such as difficulties in unifying the implementation of standards, in coordinating interface management, and in operating EPC integration. The progress of the project was once seriously delayed. The group attached great importance to the project and set up a special site supervision team.

Under effective leadership and strong support from POWERCHINA and SEPCO, the EPC project "integrated construction" policy was implemented, as were new mechanisms aimed at adapting to the new model and to the stresses of intensive work.

The first grid connection of the gas turbine was successful. The average temperature of each combustion chamber of the gas turbine is about 500 C, and the dispersion degree is 5 C, so it works to an excellent standard.
