The Uitvlugt water treatment plant, part of the UDS water supply project in Guyana, which was contracted by POWERCHINA, was completed and delivered to its buyer on Feb 22 local time.
The opening ceremony was hosted by the buyer, Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI). Guyana's vice president Joseph Harmon and other government officials attended the ceremony.
Hu Hanming, economic and commercial counsellor at the Chinese embassy in Guyana, and relevant persons in charge of the Caribbean regional offices of POWERCHINA Americas and Sinohydro Bureau 12 Co Ltd, also attended the ceremony.
Before the ceremony, Joseph Harmon and Hu Hanming, accompanied by project staff, visited the facilities of the Uitvlugt water treatment plant.
At the opening ceremony, Joseph Harmon expressed his gratitude to the Chinese embassy in Guyana and POWERCHINA. He praised the timely completion and high-quality delivery of the project, and emphasized the significance of the water treatment plant to improve the quality of drinking water and the quality of life of local residents.
Later, Joseph Harmon, Hu Hanming and Richard Van West-Charles, general manager of GWI, jointly unveiled the water treatment plant. The UDS project includes construction of water treatment plants in Uitvlugt, Diamond and Sheet Anchor, as well as an 18-kilometer water supply pipeline.

Upon completion, the three water plants will greatly relieve water shortages and provide clean water for 70,000 local residents. Featuring a settling tank and four filters, the Uitvlugt water treatment plant can treat as much as 10,000 tons of water per day.
The four water supply pumps and the 450 kW diesel-driven generator system ensure a stable water supply for 24 hours.
The plant is also supported by sodium hypochlorite and calcium hypochlorite electrolysis circuits, which can add chlorine stably and sterilize pathogenic microorganisms in the water. It is expected that the plant will provide 20,000 residents in surrounding areas with clean and stable water.
