During the period when the world faced the severe challenges presented by the novel coronavirus pneumonia, the Chinese-built Port Qasim Coal-fired Power Plant in Pakistan stepped on the gas, generating more than 2 billion kilowatt hours on March 20 in the year.
The major power plant was built and is being operated by Chinese utility and infrastructure construction group POWERCHINA.
A company spokesman said that as a coal-fired power station with the largest installed capacity in Pakistan, the project has also been responsibly carrying out epidemic prevention and control measures to ensure its safe and stable operations.

He said the plant has given full play to its leading role as a benchmark project in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, showcasing POWERCHINA's strong anti-risk ability and establishing a good overseas image for Chinese companies.
Since the epidemic outbreak, Port Qasim Electric Power Company has formulated and implemented prevention and control measures such as daily monitoring of employee health, comprehensive disinfection of the plant area and strengthening publicity and education on epidemic prevention.
With the spread of the epidemic in Pakistan, it continued to upgrade its epidemic prevention measures, further proposed nine requirements for strengthening epidemic prevention and control and implemented strict closed management.
In view of the fact that some domestic employees were unable to work on time, the company optimized the work process to improve efficiency and further promoted the implementation of localized management, effectively guaranteeing the normal production and operation of the power station.

Being sensitive to various factors such as local living habits, religious beliefs and cultural concepts, the company produced and distributed Chinese, English, and Urdu protective instruction manuals with pictures and text, an initiative highly praised by the vast number of Pakistani employees.
Affected by the epidemic, various departments of the Pakistani government have suspended their operations.
But relying on the long-term friendly customer relations, Port Qasim Electric Power Company nonetheless continued to conduct various work though video conferences with departments of the Pakistani government.
The company spokesman said that as a result, breakthroughs have been made in tax relief and in ensuring the company's continued production and operational cash flow.
With an installed capacity of 1,320 megawatts, the Port Qasim Coal-fired Power Plant is the first large-scale energy project in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and the largest overseas investment project by POWERCHINA.
Since the first unit generated electricity in November 2017, the cumulative power generation has exceeded 18.5 billion kWh, with 848 consecutive days of safe production.
Local officials said it can meet the electricity needs of 4 million households in Pakistan.
