Sinohydro Bureau Co, a subsidiary of POWERCHINA, completed drilling for the Puyacun No 1 tunnel along the China-Laos Railway on May 1, 83 days ahead of schedule.
The tunnel is considered a key – albeit difficult – engineering project on the railway and the owner, designers and project supervisors paid great attention to its construction.

Puyacun No 1 is a Class II risk tunnel with a total length of 6,016 meters and a maximum buried depth of about 695 meters.
Since the tunnel was drilled during the rainy season, project managers ensured access to construction roads and the smooth transportation of construction materials.
During the COVID-19 outbreak, 30 percent of Chinese employees were unable to arrive at the construction site as planned, while the number of Laotian employees dropped by more than 80 percent.
The tunnel's construction was adversely affected by daily transportation difficulties and supply issues. To combat this, project operators actively adjusted construction organization, suspended the development of non-key tunnels and ensured that key resources were allocated to the Puyacun No 1 tunnel.
