The Nam Ou River originates from the area bordering Jiangcheng in China's Yunnan province and Phongsali in northern Laos. It is the largest tributary of the Mekong River in Laos at a length of 475 kilometers.
POWERCHINA is transforming the abundant hydroenergy contained in the Nam Ou River into a driving force for the economic and social development of Laos.
The project is being developed in two phases, with total installed capacity of 1.27 million kilowatts.
At present, the first phase, comprising the Nam Ou 2, 5 and 6 plants, was put into operation in April 2016, and the cumulative power generation has reached 4.9 billion kilowatt hours.
Meanwhile, the Nam Ou 1, 3, 4 and 7 plants of the second phase of the project are in the final stage of construction.
As the main power station in the Nam Ou River basin, the Nam Ou 1 plant makes full use of water energy and deploys four units, with a total installed capacity of 180,000 kW.
The first unit generated power at the end of December 2019, and the cumulative power generation of the two generating units reached more than 100 million kWh. All units will generate power by the end of this year.
