Zimbabwe media reports POWERCHINA-built project on track

The major expansion project for the Hwange Thermal Power Station being undertaken in the southern African country of Zimbabwe by POWERCHINA is on track, according to local media.

A report on the online website of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation on Nov 12 quoted Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Guo Shaochun as saying that the novel coronarivus outbreak would not slow the pace of the $1.5 billion Hwange project.

Ambassador Guo said that although the current epidemic had brought challenges to the world, the cooperation between China and Zimbabwe would not stall and China would continue to complete various infrastructure projects in Zimbabwe.

He emphasized that the expansion of the plant would greatly improve Zimbabwe's power supply and Zimbabwe's energy self-sufficiency. The envoy added that it was needed for Zimbabwe's national development and was of great significance to China-Zimbabwe cooperation.

The project is to add two 335-megawatt coal-fired units, supporting station buildings and cooling towers and a new 200,000 cubic meter reservoir to the original power station.

It will also construct 365 kilometers of 400-kilovolt transmission lines and four substations.

The construction timetable is 42 months and after the project is completed, it will be jointly operated by China and Zimbabwe.
