Solar power plant helps Qatar host carbon-neutral World Cup

Updated: December 06,2022

The 2023 FIFA World Cup is being held in Qatar from Nov 21 to Dec 18, and the country's Al Kharsaah 800MW solar power plant built by POWERCHINA is providing green energy for the world-class sports event, according to a statement by Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning on Dec 5.

Mao said that the Al Kharsaah solar power plant is the first non-fossil-fuel power station in Qatar and a key project for Qatar in promoting its 2030 National Vision, and plays an important role in helping Qatar host the carbon-neutral World Cup.

It is expected to provide Qatar with about 1.8 billion kWh of clean electricity per year, meeting the annual electricity needs of about 300,000 households.

In the future, it will be able to meet 10 percent of Qatar's peak electricity demand and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by about 26 million metric tons.
