The president said that the installed capacity of the plant has been expanded to 34 MW, and it is a big step on the path towards the country's goal of ending power cuts.

He stressed that energy security is vital to the country because it drives industries, and he commended the project for helping to resolve the imbalance between power supply and demand, as well as for its energy conservation, emission reductions and environmental protection.

The plant is located in the urban area of Kitwe in the Copperbelt Province and covers an area of 31.5 hectares.

POWERCHINA was responsible for expansion of installed capacity of 33 MW and supporting ancillary facilities at the plant with an annual planned power generation capacity of more than 56 million kWh.

The plant's power generation has helped Zambia to get out of the plight of continuously decreasing power generation of its hydropower stations due to low water levels and resultant shortfalls between power supply and demand.

It also provides a model for the country's energy structural adjustment and strategic transformation, and is also another pathfinder in POWERCHINA's development and expansion of international new energy markets.
