POWERCHINA-built solar PV project boosts Oman's green aims

Updated: February 27,2023

The World Government Summit issued a report that said Oman and other Middle East and North African countries had taken the lead in completing 60 percent of the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ibri Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project built by Chinese POWERCHINA is the largest renewable energy producer in Oman and of great significance to the country reaching the SDGs.

The country's Oman Vision 2040 development strategy proposes the goal of promoting economic diversification and national energy transformation, including achieving 20 percent of new energy production in 2030 and 39 percent of new energy output in 2040.

The Ibri Solar PV Project covers an area of 1,154 hectares, which is equivalent to about 1,600 standard football fields. It is currently the solar power plant with the largest installed capacity in Oman.

Construction was completed in January 2022, with the plant having an installed capacity of 607 MW and an annual power generation of 1,598 GWh, which can meet the annual electricity consumption of 50,000 local households and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 340,000 metric tons per year.

The project is vital for the country to diversify its local energy structure, improve the sharing capacity of the power grid during peak periods and alleviate the peak period power shortages in Muscat and the northern region of Oman.

In order to cope with the negative impact of sandstorms on power generation, POWERCHINA employed a pioneering innovation for applying cleaning robots to flat single-axis supports.

The cleaning robots can automatically and regularly clean the dust covered on the panels, greatly improving the efficiency of PV power generation and reducing operation and maintenance costs.

Moving forwards, plans are for POWERCHINA to continue its focus on eco-friendly development and contribute to the construction of a global green energy map.
