The Bangladesh Power Development Board issued the certificate of Commercial Operation Date for Barisal Power Plant, the first IPP power project invested in and constructed by POWERCHINA in Bangladesh, on April 18.
The certificate states that the Barisal Power Plant officially went into commercial operation starting from Jan 1, 2023, indicating the successful completion of the project.
The Barisal Power Plant is located in South Bangladesh. It is adjacent to the Bay of Bengal, an important position in the China-Bangladesh-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor, and has an installed capacity of 350 MW.
It adopts more advanced supercritical units and related equipment, including boilers, turbines, and generators that were all designed and manufactured by Chinese brands. With a higher unit efficiency and lower energy consumption, the plant’s concentration of pollutant emissions is far lower than the standards of Bangladesh and the World Bank.
Since the plant went into commercial operation, it has generated a total of more than 300 million kWh of electricity, which has greatly improved Bangladesh's power and energy structure, helped alleviate power shortages in the country, as well as brought new development opportunities to local residents.
During construction, by giving full play to its advantages in the integration of the whole industrial chain of its investment, construction, and operation model, POWERCHINA overcame difficulties brought by the COVID-19 pandemic and successfully realized grid-connected power generation.
In addition, POWERCHINA actively fulfilled its social responsibilities. Efforts were made to help widen and repair local roads, regularly visit and donate to local orphanages, as well as to provide training and jobs for over 5,000 people.
The company's high-quality performance was recognized by the local government and residents.
Moving forward, POWERCHINA will continue to contribute China's wisdom and solutions to the construction of the 2041 Vision of Bangladesh and Golden Bengal.
