The river training project of the Padma Bridge in Bangladesh, undertaken by POWERCHINA, received a handover letter from the client on Aug 9, marking the completion of the project and its entrance into the warranty period.
The construction site is located near Mawa Ferry, about 50 kilometers south of Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh. Both sides of the upstream and downstream river channels of the Padma Bridge were trained in an effort to protect the embankments and bridge from erosion.
The construction area on the northern bank stretches 2 kilometers, while the one on the southern bank stretches 11.5 kilometers. The main construction work included channel dredging and bank protection.
As a significant part of Bangladesh's "Number One Project," the project involved dredging and backfilling with a volume exceeding 75 million cubic meters and a total dredging volume exceeding 100 million cubic meters.
A total of 3.01 million metric tons stone blocks were procured, which could fill 50,000 standardized containers and cover an area of more than 150,000 square meters.
These make the project the largest of its kind in the world.
The project achieved a 100-percent pass rate for permanent project acceptance, a first-time pass rate of over 95 percent, and customer satisfaction exceeding 90 percent, showcasing POWERCHINA's capabilities in Bangladesh.
The Padma River has an annual runoff of 13.1 trillion cubic meters and is known as one of the "most treacherous and unpredictable" rivers in the world. The completion of the project will improve connectivity and economic development in Bangladesh and the South Asian region.
