With the 15th BRICS Summit of leaders held in Johannesburg, South Africa on August 23, the world's attention was once again on South Africa. POWERCHINA has also been engaged in the construction of various green energy projects in the country.
The 100MW Redstone concentrated solar thermal power plant is located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa and is the country's largest of its kind.
The project employs tower solar thermal technology with a total mirror area exceeding 1 million square meters. The heat storage system utilizes a dual-tank storage model for cold and hot storage, with a storage duration of 12 hours, enabling power supply during peak electricity demand at night.
In recent days, the construction progress of the plant has been accelerated, reaching several important milestones. Upon completion, it is estimated to deliver around 480 gigawatt-hours of electricity to the grid each year, providing stable power supply to over 200,000 households in South Africa.
Additionally, the project has also generated thousands of jobs locally, stimulated the local supply chain, and contributed to social and economic development.
In July of this year, POWERCHINA signed EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) and O&M (Operation and Maintenance) contracts for the 123-megawatt Damlaagte Photovoltaic (PV) Project in South Africa, which hold significant implications for local energy transition.
The project is located 20 kilometers west of Sasolburg in the Free State Province of South Africa. It will provide approximately 300 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity to the South African national grid each year, offering crucial support in addressing the local power crisis and promoting regional economic and social development.
The Damlaagte 123 MW PV project is the first large-scale ground-mounted PV power station project signed by a Chinese-funded enterprise in South Africa, and is expected to further enhance the company's influence in the South African power market, as well as expand the company's market share.
Moving forward, POWERCHINA will continue to promote new energy development in Africa and meet the continent's electricity demands through clean and green means.
