The Fourth Baghdad International Water Conference, hosted by the Iraq Ministry of Water Resources, was held on April 29 in Baghdad, Iraq. POWERCHINA was invited to participate, with Peng Gang, president of POWERCHINA MENA, attending and speaking at the roundtable.
Peng exchanged views on two topics: desalination and carbon reduction. He pointed out that POWERCHINA is a global leader in clean and low-carbon energy, water resource utilization, and environmental construction, as well as the largest EPC contractor and desalination project contractor in the Middle East.
As of the end of 2023, POWERCHINA had completed a total of 11 desalination projects in the Middle East and North Africa region. Among them, seven projects have already been operational and have a cumulative installed capacity of over 700MIGD (million imperial gallons per day) –approximately 3.2 million cubic meters per day. Another four such projects are still under construction.
Moreover, POWERCHINA is actively researching the use of photovoltaic, wind power, and energy storage as power sources for future desalination projects. If such methods prove fruitful, they will reduce the electricity demand of these projects from the grid, while also maximizing their green energy utilization rate.
During the conference, Peng and representatives from the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources signed a memorandum of understanding on the Iraq dam projects. Both parties agreed to engage in comprehensive cooperation in the field of water resource engineering.
