Representatives from POWERCHINA attends the ceremony.
A completion and commissioning ceremony was held on May 2 for the Mendi Airport runway and terminal project, which was constructed by POWERCHINA in Papua New Guinea (PNG). James Marape, PNG prime minister, attended the ceremony and delivered a speech.
In his address, Marape expressed his gratitude for the significant contributions made by the POWERCHINA. He noted that previously, residents of the Southern Highlands Province had to travel to Mount Hagen Airport in the neighboring Western Highlands Province to catch flights.
The completion and commissioning of Mendi Airport will completely transform the travel sector for the local people. With the airport now officially operational, it will greatly improve local transportation conditions and inject new momentum into the local economy.
Mendi Airport is the only airport in the Southern Highlands Province. It is also the second airport project completed and commissioned by POWERCHINA in PNG, following Gurney Airport. The project includes a new airport runway measuring 1,482 meters in length and 32 meters in width, as well as a new steel-structured terminal building that has a construction area of 1,800 square meters. Major construction work involved reinforcing the existing runway, taxiway, and apron pavement, designing and constructing the new terminal, and building a tractor shed, power distribution room, staff dormitories, and related auxiliary facilities.
