Construction officially commenced on the largest clean energy power station in Kazakhstan – project to modernize (coal to gas conversion) the Almaty CHP-2 – on July 1. The project is led by POWERCHINA, with Dongfang Electric International Cooperation Co as the EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) general contractor.
Over 150 representatives from the project's owner – Joint Stock Company Almaty Electric Stations, the engineering team and various participating units attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
Located in Northwest Almaty, the project is a reconstruction of the Almaty-2 Combined Heat and Power Plant, with a total installed capacity of 600 megawatts. It is the largest energy project currently under construction in Kazakhstan, responsible for providing electricity and heating to the residents of Almaty.
The project is directly supervised by the Office of the President of Kazakhstan and is scheduled to commence commercial operations in September 2026.
The new plant is expected to reduce pollutant emissions by approximately 90 percent compared to the old power plant, significantly enhancing energy-saving and emission-reduction benefits, improving the environment, and promoting the structural transformation of energy in Kazakhstan.
