The Mellegue Dam is being constructed by POWERCHINA.
Following four days and nights of intensive work, POWERCHINA completed the first anti-seepage concrete panel pour for the main section of the Mellegue Dam project on Oct 31 in Tunisia. This milestone marks the project's transition to its next critical phase, setting a solid foundation for future reservoir filling.
With a steep slope ratio of 1:0.6, the panel presented significant construction challenges. The panel plays a crucial role as the dam's primary line of defense against seepage. Due to the panel's large concrete volume, high anti-seepage requirements, strict slump, and temperature controls, POWERCHINA conducted detailed safety and technical briefings with the construction personnel beforehand, ensuring the pour was completed with high quality, safety, and stability.
The Mellegue Dam, Tunisia's largest ongoing water conservancy project, is expected to reach an average storage capacity of 190 million cubic meters and a maximum of 305 million cu m. This major water hub will play a significant role in regulating the seasonal drought and flood cycles of the Mellegue River, providing irrigation for 496,000 hectares of farmland and drinking water for 243,000 people downstream. It will also contribute to the overall ecological protection of the river basin.
