Representatives from both countries attend the groundbreaking ceremony.
On Dec 19, the groundbreaking ceremony of the Ranomafana Hydroelectricity Power Plant, to be built by POWERCHINA, was held in Madagascar. Andry Rajoelina, Madagascar's President, and Ji Ping, Chinese Ambassador to Madagascar, attended the event.
During the ceremony, President Rajoelina expressed his gratitude to the Chinese government and enterprises for their active involvement and dedicated efforts. He emphasized that the Ranomafana Hydroelectricity Power Plant is a key project supporting Madagascar's goals of developing hydropower resources, advancing industrialization, and achieving energy independence.
Ambassador Ji hailed the successful commencement of the project, noting that the power plant represents another milestone in the cooperation between China and Madagascar.
The power plant will significantly enhance the stability of the capital region's power grid, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, optimize Madagascar's energy structure, lower electricity generation and utilization costs, and contribute to the government's goal of doubling national electricity access by 2030.
The project is located on the Ikopa River, about 90 kilometers northwest of Antananarivo, the country's capital. With an installed capacity of 64 megawatts, it is the largest bilateral cooperation project between China and Madagascar since the establishment of diplomatic relations.
