The Laos Monsoon 600 Megawatts Wind Power Project, undertaken by POWERCHINA, energized its 500-kilovolt booster station and No 1 and No 2 115kV booster stations on Feb 16 and 17, under the witness of the Vietnam Electricity, the project owner.
The project includes one 500 kV booster station, a 27-kilometer 500 kV transmission line, four 115 kV booster stations, and a 34-km 115 kV transmission line. It is the first in Laos, the largest single-unit wind power project in Southeast Asia, and the first cross-border (Vietnam-Laos) new energy transmission project in Asia.
Located in Sekong Province in southern Laos, the project faced significant challenges due to its rugged terrain, resource shortages, and the rainy season from May to October, complicating equipment procurement, transportation, and installation.
The project transmits electricity to Vietnam via a 500 kV overhead line. POWERCHINA took proactive measures, overcame numerous challenges, and completed the grid site acceptance and final energization within 11 days. The 115 kV booster station achieved energization four days ahead of the baseline schedule.
