The Kabwe Solar Power Station in Zambia.
Zambia's Minister of Energy, Makozo Chikote, recently led a delegation to inspect the 100 MW Kabwe Solar Power Station, constructed by POWERCHINA.
He praised the initiative, saying, "Chinese enterprises have used sunlight to strengthen the close friendship between our two nations, setting a model for Africa's energy transition."
This solar power station is the country's largest solar project and a landmark in China-Zambia energy cooperation. It is expected to benefit 30,000 to 50,000 households and alleviate power rationing issues.
Chikote noted, "The station will help reduce power cuts and provide energy for industrial and mining enterprises, boosting local economic development and paving the way for national energy independence."
Currently, 85 percent of Zambia's electricity comes from hydropower, which is vulnerable to climate conditions. Chikote emphasized that this project is a critical starting point for Zambia's energy transition. "We aim to advance a 1,000 MW clean energy plan, enhancing technology sharing, grid interconnection, and empowering livelihoods for a more stable energy supply."
The project employed 1,350 local workers and trained over 200 skilled personnel, contributing to Zambia's energy industry. Its success is expected to provide valuable insights for energy transitions in Africa and deepen China-Zambia clean energy cooperation.
