POWERCHINA employees relocate Egyptian spiny-tailed lizards in Saudi Arabia.
POWERCHINA's AHK2 400 MW solar power project in Saudi Arabia has completed the scientific protection and relocation of Egyptian spiny-tailed lizards, a species listed as endangered by the United Nations.
This initiative aligns with the International Finance Corporation standards, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and the regulations of the Saudi National Center for Wildlife (NCW), achieving both energy development and ecological protection.
POWERCHINA engaged a third-party environmental consultancy to conduct a comprehensive biodiversity assessment of the area, identifying 13 habitats for the lizards.
The project team also developed a detailed Lizard Relocation Plan to minimize the impact of construction on the species, which the NCW approved. The relocation process included habitat assessment, development of relocation strategies, communication for approvals, individual transfer and release, and long-term monitoring.
This meticulous approach ensures the lizards' safe relocation to areas with ecological conditions similar to their original habitats, with a commitment to at least one year of monitoring.
This initiative meets the high standards for environmental and social risk management set by international financial institutions and has garnered strong approval from project stakeholders. It highlights POWERCHINA's commitment to sustainable development principles in its overseas projects.
POWERCHINA deeply integrates environmental, social, and governance principles into its corporate strategy and project management, fulfilling its commitment to "building clean energy and protecting our planet".
The company is also committed to promoting biodiversity protection and green construction as part of the global transition to sustainable energy. By adhering to high compliance standards, fostering technological innovation, and engaging in multi-stakeholder collaboration, it aims to harmonize economic, environmental, and social benefits in every project.
