The construction of Polihali Dam Project is steadily underway.
Polihali Dam Project in Lesotho, constructed by POWERCHINA, achieved its first contract milestone ahead of schedule on Dec 6: the dam's full-section fill reached the design elevation of EL. 1977 (a dam height of 65 meters). This marks the official transition of southern Africa's largest water diversion control project into its peak construction phase.
A high-level delegation of over 40 people — including Mr. Kepa Keqe, the District Administrator of Mokhotlong, as well as Principal Chiefs and members of parliament — visited the construction site to witness the achievement. They were accompanied by representatives from the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) and the international supervision team.
The delegation inspected the concrete pouring of the intake tower and the mechanized filling operations of the dam. Mr. Kepa Keqe stated that the dam is a major national project for Lesotho, vital for the water and power supply of both Lesotho and South Africa. He expressed his anticipation for the project's early completion to benefit the people of both nations as soon as possible.
This construction milestone is more than just a 65-meter-high concrete structure; it is also a major step forward for Lesotho's water resource management, and a critical move toward resolving South Africa's water security bottlenecks.
It is expected to become an international cooperation model for southern Africa, guided by the principles of extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits.
