The Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant is Tanzania's largest hydropower plant by installed capacity.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan attended the completion ceremony for the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant Project, co-built by POWERCHINA, on Aug 22, announcing that the plant had entered full commercial operation.
In her speech, Hassan said that once fully operational, the plant would provide nearly half of Tanzania's stable electricity supply to the national grid, fundamentally addressing the country's long-standing power shortages and fulfilling an energy development vision spanning decades.
A sufficient and reliable power supply will provide strong momentum for attracting investment, advancing industrialization, creating jobs, and increasing household incomes, further unlocking Tanzania's potential for economic and social development.
Located along the lower reaches of the Rufiji River in southeastern Tanzania, the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant is a multipurpose infrastructure project designed primarily for power generation, while also serving flood control and irrigation needs.
With a total installed capacity of 2,115 MW, it is Tanzania's largest hydropower plant and a landmark project in the country's energy development.
POWERCHINA was responsible for the project's overall design and major construction works, including the roller-compacted concrete dam, stilling basin, and water conveyance system. The company's strong technical expertise and high-quality execution also provided a solid foundation for the plant's completion and commissioning.
