The project can enhance Cunene's water resource security and drought resilience.
Angolan President João Lourenço, accompanied by First Lady Ana Dias Lourenço, attended the completion ceremony for lots 4, 5, and 6 of the Cunene drought relief project on Sept 5, built by POWERCHINA.
During the ceremony, Lourenço cut the ribbon and unveiled the project plaque, then walked to the water intake tower at the Endue Dam to open the sluice gate. As water from the reservoir flowed into the main canal, streams began channeling a steady supply to local households.
Located in southern Angola, Cunene has long suffered from severe droughts. To combat the crisis and improve local livelihoods, the Angolan government began planning a series of drought relief projects for the region in 2019.
POWERCHINA built lots 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 of the project. Through careful organization, strategic planning, and high-performance execution, POWERCHINA advanced construction to ensure the project's smooth delivery.
Previously, lots 1 and 2 were completed and put into operation in April 2022, with Lourenço also attending the inauguration and cutting the ribbon. The commissioning of lots 4, 5, and 6 further boosts the region's water supply security, providing a stable water source for local residents' daily lives as well as agricultural and livestock development.
