POWERCHINA's Hassyan 180 MIGD SWRO Independent Water Project is the gold winner of the 2026 IWA Project Innovation Awards.
The 2026 International Water Association (IWA) World Water Congress & Exhibition opened on Oct 6 in Glasgow, the United Kingdom. The POWERCHINA-built Hassyan 180 MIGD SWRO Independent Water Project in the United Arab Emirates won gold in the "Exceptional Project Execution and Delivery" category at the IWA Project Innovation Awards.
This marks POWERCHINA's first-ever win in this category and a major international recognition of the company's desalination engineering construction and international contract fulfillment.
The IWA Project Innovation Awards were established by the IWA and are held every two years. An international panel of judges selects water projects from around the globe that demonstrate strong innovation, practical outcomes, and industry-leading value, with only one gold award granted per category.
Following preliminary reviews, full submission filings, and final evaluations, the Hassyan 180 MIGD SWRO Independent Water Project was recognized for its effective performance management practices, efficient international coordination, and outstanding engineering delivery results.
Utilizing seawater reverse osmosis technology, the project has a designed daily water production capacity of 818,000 cubic meters, making it one of the largest seawater reverse osmosis desalination projects in the world.
During construction, the project team utilized its strengths in international EPC integrated delivery, collaborating with partners such as ACWA Power and SIDEM to deliver water 75 days ahead of schedule. The project is intended to help Dubai strengthen its water supply security.
The project relies entirely on green power, boasting a unit water production energy consumption of approximately 3.21 kWh per cubic meter. Furthermore, the company monitored marine ecosystems, minimized harm to local sea turtle populations, and implemented mangrove restoration measures throughout the construction process.
