Bui Hydropower Station, Ghana

Updated: February 10,2022

Bui Hydropower Project is built on the Black Volta river at the Bui Gorge, which is at the junction of northern Ghana and Cote d' lvoire. The main structures of the project include a roller compacted concrete dam with a height of 110 meters and behind-dam factory houses. Three separate Francis turbine-generators are installed in the power plant, with a total capacity of 400-megawatt and an annual power generation of 1 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh).

In April 2007, POWERCHINA won the contract for the construction of this project in Ghana in EPC mode, with a contract amount of 600 million US dollars. PowerChina Northwest Engineering Corporation Limited undertook the design of the project. Sinohydro Bureau 8 Co. Ltd was responsible for all construction tasks including civil construction, metal structure fabrication and installation, transmission and transformation lines and unit installation, etc.

The project began in 2008 and was completed and inaugurated at the same year in 2013,which has became the second largest hydroelectric generating plant in Ghana. In the later stage of the project, according to the actual situation of the hydropower plant,a small unit project with a capacity of 4000 kW was added outside the main contract of the project, which is of great significance for improving the actual output of Bui Hydropower Plant.

Bui Hydropower Project has won many awards, including the Power Engineering Award of the Republic of Ghana in 2013, the Engineering Excellence Award in 2014, the Project Implementation Scheme Award in 2015, and the Luban Prize (offshore engineering) of China in 2016-2017.
